NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) was designed for SSD. It communicates between the storage interface and the System CPU using high-speed PCIe sockets, independent of storage form factor. Input/Output tasks performed using NVMe drivers begin faster, transfer more data, and finish faster than older storage models using older drivers, such as AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) a feature of SATA SSDs. Because it was designed specifically for SSDs, NVMe is becoming the new industry standard for both servers in the data centre and in client devices like laptop, desktop PCs and even next gen gaming consoles.

The benefits of NVMe Technology

  1. Superior Storageand Compatibility – Taking advantage of the same lanes that connect direct to the CPU, NVMe can be highlighted through the advantages of: PCIe socket transfer >25x more data than the standard SATA devices, SATA Transfers from 150MB/s (sata I) to 600MB/S (sata III) and NVME from from 500MB/S (PCIe Gen 2) to 2000MB/S (PCIe Gen 4). In addition, NVMe works with all major operating systems.
  2. Superior Speed - Since NVMe drives are above the PCIe, they are unaffected by the ATA interface bottleneck and can deliver up to 4x the IOPS of even the fastest SAS option available. The NVMe also sends commands 2x faster than AHCI drives.
  3. Superior Energy Efficiency – NVMe drives deliver significantly lower power when in standby mode. This is through the L1.2 low power mode that reduced power consumption by 97% from 50mW to 2mW. This enables businesses to keep their data centre costs at a minimum.

What NVMe drive should I choose?

When choosing the right type of NVMe drive on the market for your use case you must consider: the specifications, sizes, and form factors.

NVMe Form Factors can be categorised through:

  • Add-in Cards. This is the most supported method of using NVMe, as it only requires a system with a motherboard that has an available PCIe slot. However, this form factor cannot be hot-swapped, require more physical capacity and utilise more power.
  • U.2 NVMe 2.5” Drives. Similar to most SSDs today but are different as they connect to the M.2 port on the motherboard via cable. This form factor is most like SSDs when compared to the simplicity of deployment and serviceability for data centres.
  • M.2 Drives. Described as “sticks” of memory which are connected to the M.2 port on the motherboard. This form factor is advantageous as it comes in different lengths: 42mm, 80mm and 110mm, when compared to U.2 and PCIe drives, take up much less physical space.

Choosing the right NVMe drive for my use case

We know that some people may have trouble choosing the right NVMe drive and storage size for their use case. At DiGiCOR, we have a team of expert technicians and presales that will provide you with necessary information and advice regarding the drive compatibility and suitability for your business and use case. This ensures that you will be getting the ideal NVMe solution based on your decision.

NVMe drives can be split into 3 tiers:

  • Endurance Drives. These deliver 10 writes per day with 175,000 random 4K Write IOPS.
  • Mixed Use Drives. These deliver 3 writes per day with 56,000 random 4K Write IOPS.
  • Read Intensive Drives. These deliver 0.3 writes per day with 35,000 random 4K Write IOPS.
