A Tribute to The Women Behind DiGiCOR

Roham Hosseini - Marketing Manager - DiGiCOR

To celebrate international women's day, we want to shine a spotlight on a few of our incredible women behind DiGiCOR.

Gender equality is an uphill battle and a very long journey. As a business that works in the ICT sector, our team was lucky enough to have some very bright female thought leaders in our team. In this article, we begin with a short interview with DiGiCOR's co-founder and a well-known icon in our niche industry, Cathy Gu. Then we will bring the spotlight to some of our up-and-coming personnel who proved that women are not only equal in a predominantly male-oriented industry, but, they grow in their role and become advocates for equality and leaders in their teams.

We hope we can motivate girls from across the world to pursue careers in ICT and find their inspiration in heroes of gender equality in the IT industry.

25 years as a female leader in ICT

Cathy Gu, with over two decades of entrepreneurial experience in the IT industry. Founded Digicor in 1997 with a focus on server and storage solutions in Australia and New Zealand. Cathy's journey hasn't been a straight line and it had its ups and downs. We interviewed Cathy and asked her opinion about some of the myths around her profession and role in the Technology industry.

What do you think about this sentence "Women aren’t fit for leadership roles"?

Women in IT create a balanced environment because they are not only considerable, but they take care of their employees. It took me a lot of time and had to work very hard to change the toxic work culture. To achieve a better workplace, I spent time working closely with different departments and evaluating each individual's strengths and weaknesses. Once I know my team better, I was able to work closely with them to solve key factors impacting our culture. Now I am proud of DiGiCOR's culture and the diversity we have in our workforce. Building on strengths shaped a young team that is welcoming to different cultures and is inclusive.

What are some of the challenges you are facing as a leader?

As a leader, I've faced challenges and overcame them. An example of some challenges I’ve overcome over the years is putting away my self-doubt to step up for my team as a trusted leader. The challenges never stop in your career, right now caused by Covid-19 we are facing tremendous shortages and unprecedented lead times. Creating a culture of collaboration and an inclusive team helps us deal with the problems together and move forward.

How do you lead your team?
Since I've had first-hand experience in being treated unfairly as a migrant woman in STEM, I use my heart to direct people instead of forcing authority. I spend time self-evaluating and learning how I can improve because it benefits the company when an individual learns new skills. I've taken risks that have been beneficial to the company and have given staff the opportunity to work individually and reward staff.

Who inspires you?
Most of the people that inspire me are women, and would I encourage other women to stand up to be leaders in technology. I highly emphasize giving leadership a go because women can bring lots to a team.

Up and coming graduate star in ICT sales

Lillian is an up-and-coming face in DiGiCOR's team, she started her career as a sales operation support officer and she grew into an account management role. She has demonstrated a history of working in information technology with a strong operations professional. We asked Lillian to tell us her opinion about one of the myths surrounding females in ICT.

You are an embodiment of a myth buster of this sentence "women don’t really understand technology", based on your experience, how true is this sentence?

I jumped into the role not knowing anything about IT, especially IT hardware or knowing how to build a server but I successfully moved from sales operation support to account manager with the help of our Pre-Sales Team and my mentor Cathy Gu who has shared with me her sales experiences and knowledge being in the IT industry for over 20 years. It shows that being a woman has nothing to do with understanding technology, it's to do with passion and drive.

A talented individual who is a SaaS user champion

Hoa is a talented international business graduate, she started working with DiGiCOR as an HR generalist and assisted our team with organizing and centralizing our HR documents. In the process, she identified areas for improvement in our team's performance to automate and centralize our HR procedures. Utilizing existing MarTech, Hoa worked closely with the marketing team to create HR automation and became a very fluent user in HR Ops. Now she is a star in our team who not only creates our HR automation logic, she is also in charge of setting up the campaigns and scaling up the system for future generations.

Do you agree that women really don't care / like technology?

Women do care about technology because nowadays technology is in everything. We can't say one fits all, there are people with different preferences and interests, but for me, technology is as good as it simplifies my life. To answer the question, I care about technology because it directly impacts my work!

As an HR professional in the IT industry, how often do you come across different technologies?

I’m working as an HR professional in IT working in this industry enabled me with many opportunities to implement technological services to make HR more manageable and scalable. Technology is involved in every stage of our HR operations, from onboarding and training to 360 reviews and performance assessments. I use ground-breaking technologies every day to make my job easier and create long-lasting procedures.

Do you find it inspiring to work with Cathy?

The fact that we have a women COO makes me realize that women's voices can be heard in IT environments and have lots of other females work with me.
